Health Services and Health Promotion
Schools of Excellence (HPSE)
Health Services and the Health Promotion Schools of Excellence (HPSE) Department merged in recent years and has been under the direction of the Coordinator of Health Promotions. Working as a coordinated team the department staff strives to remove health related barriers to learning and promote healthy lifestyles to prevent disease. The department follows the recommendation of the Kentucky State Department of Education by striving to follow the Coordinated School Health model identified by the Centers for Disease Control as the model process for schools to follow. www.cdc.gov/healthyyouth/CSHP
Coordinated School Health (CSH) is a model that combines education with other support systems to encourage the adoption and maintenance of healthy behaviors to last a lifetime. There are eight components to CSH which can be fully described by clicking on the CDC website for more information:
- Health Services
- Physical Education and Other Physical Activity Programs
- Nutrition Services
- Health Promotion for Staff
- Family and Community Involvement
- Counseling, Psychological and Social Services
- Health Education
- Health and Safety Policies and Environment
The staff serves in two capacities. One capacity is to oversee and provide mandated state screenings, along with other health related services and school requirements. The second is to implement the Health Promotion Schools of Excellence program, which provides staff training and assistance with implementing Coordinated School Health Programs at select schools.
