Frequently Asked Questions

Below are questions covering a range of topics that are frequently asked to our administrators regarding Manual and YPAS.
  1. I Live Outside Jefferson County. May I attend Manual and YPAS?
No. You must be a Jefferson County resident.

  2. Is transportation provided to Manual?
Yes. JCPS bus transportation serves the entire county.

  3. I have heard that certain magnets are easier to get accepted into than others. What is the easiest magnet at Manual for acceptance?
There isn't one magnet easier to enroll in over another. Each of Manual's magnets has different criteria for acceptance.

  4. Do public school students get priority over private school students when considering applications?
    No.

  5. If I am accepted into a magnet at Manual, may I take classes at YPAS?
Yes. Many students who are not YPAS majors enjoy participating in a variety of YPAS programs. However, some courses do require an audition for admission.

  6. If I am undecided about choosing a magnet program in which to apply, what advice should I follow to narrow my choices?
Study each program carefully. Each program offers a demanding curriculum that students will find challenging and rewarding. Students should apply to the magnet area that best fits their interests and strengths.

  7. If I enroll in a YPAS major or in the visual arts magnet, will I be prepared to go to college when I graduate?
Yes. Students in all magnets receive college preparatory courses of study.

  8. What exactly is the ed. park program?
Educational park is a program available to qualified upperclassmen giving them the opportunity to take a class at the University of Louisville during the school day. Manual is the only school to offer this unique opportunity.

  9. What is the difference between advanced program courses and advanced placement classes?
Advance program is JCPS's most rigorous high school curriculum. Advanced placement classes are college level courses in which the student prepares for the advanced placement college board exams. Students scoring well enough on AP exams can earn college credit. Manual offers more AP courses than any other school in Jefferson County.

  10. Do students enrolled in one magnet area have opportunities to take elective courses from another magnet area?
Yes. Many students take elective course from another magnet major if they can work it into their schedule.

  11. Exactly why does Manual utilize an alternate day block schedule that differs so much from most schools?
Manual's alternate day block schedule affords students the flexibility to take a variety of courses. This allows students to meet all college preparatory requirements as well as extensive coursework in their chosen magnet area.

  12. I have heard that students from a few middle schools receive preference in admissions over all others. Is that true?
The only preference is an "early review" for the math, science, and technology students currently enrolled in the Newburg, Farnsley, or Meyzeek magnet programs. This only applies to Manual's MST magnet. However, there are still openings for students from other middle schools who apply to this magnet.

  13. Is it possible to major in a Manual and YPAS magnet at the same time?
Yes. It is possible. However, students must complete requirements for both magnets, which could be very demanding.

  14. How do I apply to YPAS?
Although YPAS is technically a magnet component of Manual, YPAS has a separate application process. If you wish to apply for YPAS you must indicate, on your application, that YPAS is your first choice.

  15. I want to apply to both Manual and YPAS. Should I apply to one of them and list the other as my second choice?
Because of the high number of applications we receive, we rarely look at students who have listed Manual or YPAS as their second choice.

  16. Is there a musical theatre major at YPAS?
Yes, musical theatre is a major.

  17. May I audition for more than one major at YPAS?
Yes, however you have to come a different day for each audition.

  18. Is preference given to applicants who have or have had family members at Manual?
No. Applicants are selected only on their own merits.

  19. When will I know if my child is or is not accepted into Manual?
Decision letters are sent in mid-April.

  20. Do you accept students in grades 10-12?
Yes. Upperclassmen may be identified for admission based on space availability and magnet program requirements.
