Students with demonstrated need will receive internet connectivity, data plans for 2 years
April 22, 2021 — Five Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) sites have been accepted into the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools program, Verizon’s education initiative addressing barriers to digital inclusion and a key program under Citizen Verizon, the company’s responsible business plan for economic, environmental and social advancement. In partnership with Digital Promise, Verizon Innovative Learning provides internet connectivity with monthly data plans to students with a demonstrated need.
The five schools include The Academy @ Shawnee (high school only); Central High Magnet Career Academy; Liberty High School; ESL Newcomer Academy; and Seneca High School. These five schools join 11 other JCPS middle schools that are part of earlier Verizon Innovative Learning cohorts.
“If the year of learning virtually has taught us anything, it’s that access to reliable, high-speed internet is absolutely vital for student success,” said JCPS Superintendent Dr. Marty Pollio. “This partnership through Verizon Innovative Learning and Digital Promise will help promote equity and inclusion by removing barriers to critical digital resources, whether our students are in school or at home.”
In addition to the internet connectivity and data plans, these schools will receive financial support for an instructional liaison who will provide coaching to teachers during the two years of the project. Teachers will also have access to on-demand professional learning and opportunities to collaborate with a national network of innovative, technology-driven school leaders and educators.
Verizon Innovative Learning is supporting the shift to distance learning. To date, Verizon has invested over $535 million in market value toward STEM education efforts in support of digital inclusion, impacting more than 480,000 students nationwide.
