Conni Strange was selected as the new principal of Eisenhower Elementary School on Wednesday.

Strange has been an educator with Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) for more than 13 years, serving as assistant principal of Eisenhower since 2017.

During her tenure at the school, suspensions have declined, office referrals have decreased and chronic absenteeism is improving - and indication of the school's positive culture and climate.

In addition, being named principal will allow her the opportunity to lead the school to what she considers her "North Star" - student engagement.

"Students must be meaningfully involved with their learning," she said.  "Simply put, engaged students are successful students."

She began her career as an educator in 2006 as an Exceptional Child Education (ECE) teacher at Camp Taylor Elementary, a position she held for seven years.  She then served as a consulting teacher for elementary, middle and high schools for four years, before moving to Eisenhower.

"Ms. Strange has a wide range of experience and training that will allow her to not only build upon existing strengths, but also improve identified growth areas," said Brad Weston, an assistant superintendent of elementary schools. "She encourages excellence in all aspects of the school, fostering a positive learning environment through collaboration and commitment to continuous improvement."

A member of the 2018-19 Principal Pipeline cohort, she holds master's degrees in learning behavior disorders and moderate to severe disabilities from the University of Louisville and was certified as a specialist as a director of pupil personnel, instructional leadership and supervisor of instruction from Asbury University.

Strange will assume her new role Jan. 6.  She replaces Julie Cummings, who is retiring at the end of December.
