Summit focused on PBIS and restorative practices
JCPS Superintendent Dr. Donna Hargens recently held a Superintendent’s Summit to discuss ways to continue developing more positive school environments.
The summit focused on the district’s commitment to using evidence-based behavior frameworks, such as Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and restorative practice.
“We’ve been in the process of combining PBIS with restorative practice and classroom managements, and this summit gives us an opportunity to talk about how these strategies work together,” Dr. Hargens said. “Our focus is on creating systems in our schools where everyone feels valued and led to better academic outcomes.”
Initiated during her tenure, the Superintendent’s Summit provides parents, administrators, and community leaders the opportunity to ask questions and give valuable feedback to assist JCPS in implementing Vision 2020, the district’s strategic plan.
The summit included discussion by local and national experts, including Keith Hickman, director of continuing education, International Institute of Restorative Practice; Dr. Jessica Swain-Bradway, research and evaluation director, Midwest PBIS Network; and Dr. Terry Scott, director, Center for Instructional and Behavioral Research in Schools, College of Education and Human Development, University of Louisville.
