Dr. Michael Newman Named New Principal at duPont Manual High School

Dr. Newman is returning to the district after serving in Kentucky’s Public Protection Cabinet.

Becoming the principal of duPont Manual High School represents a special homecoming for Dr. Michael Newman. He graduated from Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) and worked for the district for more than a decade before moving on to the state level. Newman became the Kentucky Commissioner of Professional Licensing last year.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Newman back to JCPS as the newly named principal of duPont Manual High School,” JCPS Assistant Superintendent of High Schools Christy Rogers said. “Dr. Newman is focused on enhancing the student experience, improving communication systems, supporting and promoting racial equity all while maintaining national recognition. He is an experienced school leader with a strong passion for Manual, and we look forward to supporting his work.”

Dr. Newman graduated from Louisville Male High School and taught in Tennessee before starting his career with JCPS as a teacher at Western High School. He taught English for a year before becoming the assistant principal there in 2007. He  then served as the principal for seven years before transitioning to the State of Kentucky Public Protection Cabinet in February 2020. 

“It is a great honor to begin my 21st year in education as the principal of duPont Manual High School,” said Newman. “I will ensure my passion for empowering students and the school community to be models of growth and leadership is seen daily. Together we will work hard to maintain Manual as an exemplary school and continue to provide the best learning experiences in the state.”

Dr. Newman earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee Chattanooga, a master’s degree from the University of Tennessee Knoxville, and his doctorate from the University of Louisville.

Dr. Newman starts his new position on February 22.
