Greathouse/ Shryock Named 2021 Blue Ribbon School

School one of only 5 public schools recognized in Kentucky in 2021 for distinction

September 21, 2021 — Greathouse/ Shryock Traditional Elementary School was named a 2021 Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education today, one of only five Kentucky public schools selected for the distinction.

Greathouse was among 325 public and private elementary, middle and high schools across the country recognized this year for overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. Today’s announcement marks the second time Greathouse has earned the distinction.

Following today’s announcement, students, staff and family members will join a celebration at the school to highlight the school’s success.

“The partnership agreement between home and school has contributed to our school’s success. We are constantly looking for ways to improve,” said Principal Karla Davis. “It would be easy to rest on our laurels, but that’s not how we work at Greathouse. Our teachers and staff work tirelessly to maintain our long history of excellence and are very deserving of this recognition.”

Davis said Greathouse sets high expectations for all role groups, from students to staff to parents, and strives to meet the needs of all students through daily intervention and enrichment classes known as Fostering Individual Needs Every day, or FINE. In addition, the school launched its Leading Lions initiative, a monthly recognition program to highlight students who show leadership and kindness to others.

Davis also cited a commitment to the community through Greathouse Gives initiatives, such as service and fundraising projects for Water Step, Children’s Hospital Foundation, veterans and Ronald McDonald House.

The Blue Ribbon program recognizes schools in one of two performance categories, based on all student scores, student subgroup scores and graduation rates:

  • Exemplary High Performing Schools – Among the state’s highest-performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.
  • Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools – Among the state’s highest-performing schools in closing achievement gaps between student groups and all students.

The 2021 National Blue Ribbon Schools Awards Ceremony is slated to be held in early November in National Harbor, Maryland. The new Blue Ribbon schools will be honored and receive plaques and flags during the ceremony.
