JCPS kicks off Backpack League summer learning initiative

Teachers and staff welcome around 1,000 third through sixth graders

Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) has launched its inaugural Backpack League summer learning initiative. JCPS teachers and staff welcomed around 1,000 third through sixth graders on July 8 to Louisville Male High School, which has been transformed into a learning hub for the Backpack League students.

During the innovative, four-week summer learning program, JCPS is partnering with community groups and its own teachers to provide students with extended learning opportunities focused on strengthening their literacy and math skills in fun, innovative ways.

Through this hands-on learning experience, students chose “adventures” they wanted to join, which include camp-like excursions to different sites around Greater Louisville and deeper learning experiences in the classroom.
