Students can receive free books and more throughout June
June 7, 2019 – Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) will roll out its Book Buggy next week, providing children and teens with free books and more to help them keep learning all summer long.
The buggy will run every Tuesday and Wednesday in June starting June 11th, and will follow the Bus Stop Café, which provides free lunches throughout the summer to anyone age 18 or under, regardless of whether he or she attends JCPS.
“The book buggy is a great way for students to stay engaged, entertained and energized about learning when they’re out of school,” said Maria Carrico, Title 1 specialist for JCPS. “This is really a one-stop shop for kids this summer: they’ll get a nutritious lunch, be able to select two new books, and receive supplies and information related to a weekly topic, such as dental hygiene, personal hygiene, and school supplies.”
Multiple studies have shown that reading over the summer can help prevent the “summer slide” – a decline in reading ability and other academic skills that can occur over the summer months when school is not in session.
