Louisville Metro Department of Codes and Regulations granted JCPS a temporary certificate of occupancy for the new Wilkerson Elementary School after completing an inspection of the building on Thursday.

Wilkerson staff and families are being notified today that current plans call for classes to start Monday, September 12th in the new building. Teachers and staff will be permitted in the school the week before to set up their classrooms and offices. Wilkerson students are currently learning in the former Watson Lane Elementary School building.

“We’re excited and can’t wait to get into the new building,” said Sara Alvey, Wilkerson principal. “While the former Watson Lane school building has made a terrific temporary home for our students and staff, there’s nothing like moving into a bright, new home that will be a great space for learning.”

The new school was built on the same property as the old Wilkerson Elementary School which was torn down last summer. Some work remains to be done on the new school, much of it on the exterior. The work should not impact classes.
