Seniors to Commit to Higher Ed at College Signing Day 2016

JCPS, 55,000 Degrees and KFC Yum! Center Teaming Up for Student Celebration

April 20, 2016 – More than 1,000 college-bound seniors in Jefferson County will participate in a “College Signing Day” ceremony – similar to those often held for student athletes – at a KFC Yum! Center event on Friday. Students from 25 Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) high schools will be honored as they officially signal their intent to go to nearly two dozen colleges.

Held in association with First Lady Michelle Obama’s Reach Higher initiative, College Signing Day recognizes a diverse group of students who are continuing their education. 55,000 Degrees is committed to increasing the number of college degrees in Louisville by 2020, with a specific goal of 50 percent of working-age adults holding a two- or four-year degree. In Louisville, over the next 10 years, 75 percent of the new jobs that pay well enough to support a family will require some kind of post-secondary education.

In addition to the “signing moment” celebration, which will begin at 12:15 p.m., students will also hear from inspiring guests, attend breakout sessions to learn college tips, visit with representatives from their colleges and have a chance to meet with other JCPS students planning to attend the same school. Representatives from nearly two dozen colleges and universities, as well as the military, will attend.
