Watson Lane Elementary Students Partner with Former NFL Player to Launch Book

Book Launch to be Held Tuesday at the School

April 18, 2016 – Students at Watson Lane Elementary are now published authors. On Tuesday, April 19, Watson Lane third through fifth graders will introduce their new book at a book launch held in partnership with former National Football League (NFL) player Joe Profit and his Legends & Kids Young Authors Program.

The Legends & Kids Young Authors Program emphasizes the arts of creative writing, drama, illustration and storytelling in a creative and fun way. The program enhances creativity through writing and stirs the imagination of students in order to build creative literacy.

In October 2015, the students began developing and writing their book, entitled Dr. Derby Cavity Busters: A Watson Lane Mystery! The book promotes good dental hygiene and focuses on overcoming the fear of going to the dentist. Embracing the storyline of The Wizard of Oz, the book chronicles the journey of the main character, Jasmine, along the Flossy Brick Road.

“The Legends & Kids Young Authors Program provided our students a wonderful way to display their creativity, professionalism and writing skills,” said Watson Lane Principal Joshua Williams. “This initiative not only empowered our students to showcase their writing and illustrative talents, but it also afforded them the amazing experience and opportunity to become published authors.”

Dr. Derby Cavity Busters: A Watson Lane Mystery! will be available in the school library and sold on Amazon.com.

The book launch will be held at 9:30 a.m. in the library of Watson Lane Elementary (7201 Watson Lane).
