Physical Development & Health Services

Health Services and the Health Promotion Schools of Excellence (HPSE) Department work together to remove health-related barriers to learning and to promote healthy lifestyles.

Health Services staff members oversee and provide state-mandated screenings and other health-related services. The staff members also implement the HPSE Program, which provides assistance and training in implementing the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child  (WSCC) model in selected schools.

The model helps align health and education to improve students’ cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development. There are ten components to WSCC:

  • Health Services
  • Physical Education and Physical Activity
  • Nutrition Environment and Services
  • Employee Wellness
  • Family Engagement
  • Counseling, Psychological, and Social Services
  • Health Education
  • Physical Environment
  • Community Involvement
  • Social and Emotional Climate

Laws and Policy for Coordinated School Health

To move from the model to action, schools must first ensure adherence to laws and policies related to student health. For more information, contact Health Services at (502) 485-3387.

Best Practices for Coordinated School Health

Best practices related to the ten WSCC areas guide schools in making changes that best support student, staff, and parent health needs. All appropriate laws and policies must be in place and enforced before best practices can be implemented.
