Yes, in June 2021, the JCPS Board of Education adopted the policy 08.1348 “Certified Oral and Written Language Support. The policy identifies the district’s obligations to provide interpreting and translation services for individuals who need assistance.

What populations qualify to receive interpretation and translation services in JCPS?
Interpretation and translation services are available to all JCPS students, parents, guardians, and employees.
How can JCPS international populations request interpretation and translation services?
Parents or guardians can request language support by calling, visiting, or sending a note to their child’s school. District employees who need language support may request assistance via their immediate supervisor.
Who can access interpretation and translation services for students and families in JCPS?
Any JCPS administrator, instructional, or clerical employee who has applied for and received requester login credentials for the Translator Interpreter Engagement (T.I.E.) system.
How long does it take to get an interpreter?
To allow time for scheduling, you must submit your request for an in-person interpreter at least five workdays in advance of the event. For emergency interpretations, please contact JCPS Language Services at (502) 485-6379.
Can I use a free online interpretation program/app to communicate with JCPS international populations?
Due to inaccuracy concerns, we do not recommend the use of free online programs/apps for language support. We recommend that you contact JCPS Language Services when absolute accuracy is called for.
When should I submit a request to translate a JCPS document?
For nonemergency document translations, you must submit your requests at least ten workdays in advance of need. For emergency translations, please contact JCPS Language Services at (502) 485-6379.
Does JCPS Language Services facilitate translations for all written materials?
Each translation request is reviewed by JCPS Language Services to determine if translation is feasible. JCPS Language Services typically approves translations of vital documents as defined by the originating department. We also approve translation of documents that allow families access to services and/or benefits.
Can I use a free online translation tool to save time and money?
Due to inaccuracy concerns, we do not recommend the use of free online programs/apps for language support. We recommend that you contact JCPS Language Services for all your interpretation and translation needs.
Do I need permission from JCPS Language Services to access over-the-phone interpretation?
You do not need prior permission to use over-the-phone interpretation. However, to save resources, please make certain that you have all contact information handy and a script of what you want to convey to the parent before placing the call.
What information do I need to access over-the-phone interpretation?
You may obtain over-the-phone access information by clicking the Over-the Phone Interpreting tile on the JCPS Language Services webpage.
Can I share over-the-phone interpretation access information with JCPS international populations?
Please do not share over-the-phone interpretation access information with parents, guardians, students, or any agency. A JCPS employee must always be in charge of accessing this service.
Can I share over-the-phone interpretation accessing information with another coworker?
You may share over-the-phone interpretation access information with any JCPS employee you deem necessary.
