JCPS SCHOOL SAFETY PROPOSAL
Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) is exploring innovative approaches to school safety that keep our schools secure while students engage in learning. In listening to our community and gaining initial feedback, JCPS has developed a concept that works to strengthen relationships within in a school and accountability for those called upon to protect students. Through preliminary discussions with various community groups, a potential dual strategy has been created and we need your feedback. The plan calls for a position at each middle and high school of a Safety Administrator to foster a positive culture and climate and build a trusting environment among students and employees in the building. This person will also assist with aspects of school safety procedures. The proposal also calls for enhancing our current district security and developing School Safety Officers who would be armed, sworn law enforcement officers. These officers would serve a group of schools in a geographic area and would not be inside of a school. They would be nearby to respond quickly to an incident.
