Ballard High School strives to meet the needs of students, parents, and community through the implementation of a rigorous and disciplined academic environment as we continue to build upon a longstanding tradition of excellence in academics, the arts, and athletics. Ballard continues to rank among the top schools in the state for number of National Merit Finalists and Governor’s Scholars Program participants. Ballard has the highest state assessment scores of all Jefferson County nonselective schools, and students annually outperform Kentucky and U.S. averages on the SAT and ACT tests. Ballard is leading the way in the Academies of Louisville initiative as 1 of the 11 participating JCPS high schools opening as a wall-to-wall Academy school for the 2018-19 school year.

- Ballard offers an ever-expanding list of Advanced Placement (AP) courses, Advance Program (Gifted and Talented), Honors Program, and Exceptional Child Education (ECE) Program.
- Ballard offers a Freshman Career Options Course to all ninth-grade students. This 12-week course is designed to support student efforts, encourage student success, and improve personal and academic skills. Students will be able to make an informed decision about further course work and direction working toward individual postsecondary planning. As a result, students will choose a career pathway at Ballard.
