Dr. Pollio sends note to JCPS families following release of state audit

Dear JCPS Families:

This afternoon, our district received findings from the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) related to the management audit.  The audit process started in 2016, and the district has waited many months for its results.

Today, Dr. Wayne Lewis, KDE interim commissioner, released the findings and said he would be placing the district under state management and recommend that I manage the day-to-day operations of the district and have weekly progress meetings with KDE Associate Commissioner Dr. Kelly Foster.  The board would continue meeting and serve in an advisory capacity.

The audit praises the work we’ve done in the district over the past 10 months, which I believe is unprecedented.  We’ve moved this district forward to create our “Backpack of Success Skills” initiative, completely reorganize our central office to more efficiently support schools, draft a race and equity policy, and make significant improvements in our climate and culture.  The board has been an integral part of that effort, and we will continue doing this important work in the days, weeks and months to come.

We will be consulting our legal counsel to determine next steps.  The first step will be whether or not to accept the findings and recommendations or request a hearing with the Kentucky Board of Education.

A copy of the audit can be found here.  We will keep you posted as this situation progresses.

Please know that as we move forward, the success of your students will be central in any decision we make.  I appreciate your support.

Dr. Marty Pollio

JCPS Superintendent
