The JCPS General Maintenance, Renovations, and Grounds Department is responsible for preventive and corrective maintenance of districtwide buildings. This includes maintaining sewers, electrical systems, gas and water lines, and stand-by emergency power and light systems. The shops in the unit schedule and perform repairs on roofs, windows, doors, walls, floors, metal structures, ceilings, plumbing systems, locks and hardware, window shades, plaster, painting and glazing, bulletin boards, fixtures and furniture in more than 180 facilities, making up nearly 16 million square feet of floor space under roof. This unit also estimates and coordinates small district renovations projects and building modifications. Approximately 30,000 work orders are completed each year for schools and Central Office sites within the district. The department coordinates more than 20,000 work orders for other departments, such as Safety, Environmental, and Mechanical Maintenance.

The Grounds Shop is responsible for providing grounds services to 160 district school and office sites. This shop provides and maintains more than 1,250 acres of grass; provides fencing and pavement maintenance for approximately 150 miles of sidewalks and 160 miles of fences; provides emergency snow and ice removal; provides asphalt-pavement maintenance for more than 260 acres of asphalt; moves heavy equipment; maintains thousands of trees; and assists in the development of outdoor classrooms and playgrounds.
