Johnsontown Road Elementary

Johnsontown Road Elementary is located on Johnsontown Road at the intersection of Greenbelt Highway. The two story structure was built in 1966. Johnsontown Road is named for its location. In the 1880’s, a family named Johnson owned a grocery and general merchandise store on Salt River Pike, now Dixie Highway. A settlement that developed around the store became known as Johnsontown and the only road in the area that ran west from the highway to farms along the river became known as Johnsontown Road.

The settlement and road were officially called Johnsontown when the interurban streetcar line was started around 1900. Johnsontown Road was the first road west of Dixie Highway to have a layer of hard rock applied. The original school district extended along Lower River Road from Moorman Road north to Miller’s Curve and west to the Ohio River and east to Black Pond.

The first principal was Will Z. Cannon who retired in June 1976. He was followed by Marjorie Staten, John Waldrop, Sandra Hopkinson, Malinda Dutkowski and the current principal, Stephen Howard.

Presently there are classes from Pre-K through fifth grade with 430 students.
