The Jefferson County Board of Education (JCBE) is seeking applications for appointment to fill an at-large vacancy on the JCBE, due to the resignation of James Craig.
The JCBE will proceed to appoint an individual to fill this seat for the unexpired term pursuant to KRS 160.190 and Board Policy 01.3.
KRS 160.190 states in part:
(1) Any vacancy in any board of education shall be filled by a majority vote of the remaining members of the local board within sixty (60) days after the vacancy occurs. ...
(4) Any vacancy having an unexpired term of one (1) year or more on August 1 after the vacancy occurs shall be filled for the unexpired term by an election to be held at the next regular election after the vacancy occurs. The elected member shall succeed the member chosen under subsection (1) or (2) of this section to fill the vacancy.
The unexpired term for this seat ends on December 31, 2026. Thus, the JCBE will fill the vacancy within sixty (60) days, in accordance with KRS 160.190.
Senate Bill 4 (2026 RS) amended KRS 160.210 to reduce the number of JCBE members from seven to five, effective January 1, 2027. Thus, this at-large seat will cease to exist on December 31, 2026, and the appointed member will no longer serve on the JCBE.
Responsibilities of JCBE members include setting policy to govern the district, hiring/evaluating the superintendent, and levying taxes and adopting the district budget. Board members must:
Be at least 24 years old and a Kentucky citizen for the last three years;
Be a registered voter in the district;
Have completed the 12th grade or have a GED certificate
Meet all other legal qualifications (KRS 160.180); and
Complete required annual in-service training.
