On Friday, November 1st, Semple Elementary celebrated Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) and Diwali.
The Dia de Muertos ofrenda (altar) was constructed in the school lobby with items added each day to honor those loved ones who have passed in the school community. Semple's English Language Development Team teachers dressed in traditional clothing and painted their faces in the style of The Calavera Catrina. Dia de Muertos is a joyful holiday that originates in Mexico and Central America. It includes music, dancing, and parades. As people celebrate, they also connect with family and friends and take time to reflect on the nature of life and death, remembering those who are no longer here.
A display was also created, showcasing the Buddhist and Hindu Festival of Light, Diwali. Rangoli sand mandalas were placed with candles in the lobby, welcoming wealth and good luck into the school for the next year.
