Counseling and Mental Health Services

Dunn Elementary offers various counseling services to support your child's academic, social-emotional, and career development.

Our school uses a brief behavior screener three times each year to help us identify students who may benefit from additional social, emotional, or behavioral support. The screener is completed by your child's teacher based on classroom observations.

The screener looks at two broad areas:

  • Externalizing behaviors – behaviors that are easy to see, such as difficulty following directions, frequent disruptions, impulsivity, aggression, or challenges with self-control.

  • Internalizing behaviors – behaviors that may be less visible, such as excessive worry, sadness, withdrawal from others, or reluctance to participate.

This screener is not a diagnosis and does not become part of a student's academic record. It is one of many pieces of information we use, along with teacher observations and other school data, to ensure students receive the support they need to be successful at school.

If the screener suggests that a student may benefit from additional support, school staff will review the information carefully and communicate with families and seek permission before beginning any targeted interventions beyond the supports all students receive. If you hear from your child's homeroom teacher about the possible need for extra supports in one of these areas, our Counseling Team (introduced below) will be the contacts for next steps.

Contact

  • Parent/Guardian: Email or call the counselor directly.

  • Student: Request a check-in with your teacher or directly with the counselor.
