Unified Champion School

Eastern High School's Unified Youth Leadership Committee
Our Unified Youth Leadership Committee brings together peer aids, MSD students, and teachers to foster inclusivity and create a positive school culture.
Key Initiatives:
Peer Tutoring: Students support their peers with academic assignments.
Unity Day: We celebrate unity, hope, and support through school-wide events.
Unified Special Olympics: We organize and host Special Olympics events.
Fundraising: The committee raises funds through various initiatives, including the sale of handmade holiday ornaments.
By working together, our committee creates a more inclusive and compassionate school environment.

A Commitment to Inclusion
A Special Olympics Unified Champion School fosters a truly inclusive school climate, emphasizing collaboration, engagement, and respect for all. To achieve this recognition, schools must meet ten national standards of excellence, demonstrating a commitment to inclusion in various aspects of school life.
To maintain this recognition, schools must reapply every four years. The application process involves a rigorous review by state and national leaders in the field of education and Special Olympics.
During the application review process, school applications will be reviewed in two stages: first by state Program staff and then by a national Certifying Body of key educational leaders.
The next application cycle for National Banner recognition will open in Spring 2025.
Key components of a Unified Champion School include:
Special Olympics Unified Sports®: Students with and without disabilities train and compete together as teammates.
Inclusive Youth Leadership: Student leaders promote inclusion and organize school-wide initiatives.
Whole-School Engagement: The entire school community is involved in creating an inclusive environment.
