At OAS, we believe that every student deserves to feel seen, valued, celebrated, and heard. This week, a simple but meaningful activity reminded us just how much our students notice the little things we do.
A special thank you to Ms. Powell, who consistently creates thoughtful opportunities for students to express themselves, practice gratitude, and recognize the people who make a difference in their lives.
Through her BOOYAH! appreciation activity, several students shared heartfelt messages with our principal, Dr. Gomez. Their words were a beautiful reminder of what truly matters in education.
💜 “Even though it’s your first year as a principal, you have done good things.”
💜 “You represent your country with pride and represent our Latina roots in the school.”
💜 “Thank you for always being so nice and supportive towards people and cultures.”

What makes these messages so meaningful is not the compliments themselves, but what they reveal about our students.

As a new principal, Dr. Gomez continues to learn and grow alongside the OAS community. October is Filipino American History Month, a time to honor the rich history, cultural traditions, resilience, and lasting contributions of Filipino Americans to our nation.

On October 18, 1587, the first documented Filipinos arrived in what is now Morro Bay, California. Their arrival marks an important chapter in American history, more than 400 years ago!
Why do we celebrate?
Filipino Americans have helped shape our nation through their contributions to education, healthcare, science, the arts, public service, and countless other fields. Their stories are part of American history, and their contributions continue to strengthen our communities today.
2026 Theme: “Beyond the Margins: Centering Intersectional Filipino American Histories”
This year’s theme invites us to look beyond the stories traditionally highlighted in history books and recognize the voices, experiences, and contributions that have too often gone unnoticed.
It reminds us that history belongs to everyone, not just those whose names appear in textbooks.

A Filipino expression meaning “Long live!” often used to welcome others, celebrate, and express pride and enthusiasm.
Another beautiful Filipino value is BAYANIHAN, the spirit of unity, cooperation, and coming together to help one another.
