The initial elementary school registration and application period for the 2024-25 school year is November 6, 2023, through December 22, 2023.

An application must be submitted in order to receive an elementary assignment. Register and apply here.

Incoming kindergarten students, students who have moved, students new to the district, and any student interested in a magnet school or program may apply.

Elementary Schools

JCPS elementary schools are grouped into zones of three to eight schools. A child's elementary zone is determined by their home address. Most elementary school students choose to attend one of their zoned schools. 

Parents must complete an online application to enroll their child in a zoned school. On the application, parents rank each school in their zone according to their preferences. Our Office of School Choice then places the child in a school. School Choice keeps siblings together in zone schools when parents indicate the sibling’s school as their first choice. The district also considers parental choice, space, resides school, and diversity of the student body when placing students at schools. Due to boundary changes that were passed by the Jefferson County Board of Education in June 2022, there are some instances where siblings may be separated. In this situation, families can apply for a student transfer.

Parents may also choose to apply to one of the district’s magnet schools or programs, which provide a particular theme or focus. Schools with magnet programs serve both students who live in the school's zone and those who live in other zones but want to take advantage of the magnet program's particular learning theme or focus on a specific subject (such as microsociety or talent development). An online application is also required for a magnet school or program. Magnet choices are considered before the elementary zone assignments are processed. The deadline to submit a magnet application is December 22, 2023. Late applications can still be submitted and are processed based on available space. All elementary magnet admissions are lottery-based.
