A former school principal is returning to the top job inside a West Louisville elementary school. Kim Coleman has been named the new principal at Byck Elementary School.

“I am incredibly honored and excited to join the Byck community,” Coleman said. “I look forward to working closely with the faculty and staff, families, and most importantly, the students I want to continue to build on the school's successes and create an even more vibrant and collaborative learning environment.”

Coleman currently works as an education recovery leader for the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE), helping schools, including 14 in Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS), develop and implement plans for improving student achievement. From 2012-2019, Coleman was the principal at Clear Creek Elementary in Shelby County. She began her career in 2001 as a teacher in Franklin County Public Schools followed by stints as a reading interventionist in Owen County Public Schools and a literacy consultant for KDE.

“We are thrilled to bring Kim Coleman into JCPS to lead Byck Elementary,” said Dr. Nate Meyer, assistant superintendent of Accelerated Improvement Schools (AIS). “For several years, the AIS Office has had the privilege to work and learn side by side with Ms. Coleman in her role in KDE supporting our schools in state assistance. She is a highly skilled and passionate educator who is ready to engage the staff, students, and families in the Byck community.”

Coleman has a bachelor’s degree in education from Eastern Kentucky University and a master’s in administration and supervision from the University of Kentucky. She is nationally board certified (NBCT) in childhood literacy and has her superintendent certification from the University of the Cumberlands.

“I’ve spent the last 6 years working with multiple JCPS schools,” Coleman said. “I am excited to apply the improvement science tools and resources I’ve been utilizing with JCPS principals to my own students and staff at Byck Elementary. I will continue the great work that has been started by Dr. Kolodey and look forward to seeing continued success.”

Coleman is replacing Carla Kolodey who is moving to Cincinnati to become the founding principal of a new school. Coleman’s first official day at Byck will be July 1.
