Music and cheers bounced through the doors at Maupin Elementary on Thursday morning. As students walked into the school, dozens of local volunteers lined the hallway with smiles and high fives to ensure a great start to the day.
“It feels like a football game or someplace where you're celebrating all the time, like Kentucky Kingdom, but it's Maupin Kingdom,” Maupin Counselor Jeffries Smith said. “Today is Flash Dads, and we are so excited to have all of the men and all of the grandads come out to say good morning to our kids."
Once a month during the school year, dozens of men and women from the community show up at JCPS elementary schools to surprise students with cheers, high fives, signs and encouragement as they show up for school. They are the Flash Dads and Mornings with Moms events coordinated by JCPS' Diversity, Equity and Poverty Department.
“It means a lot to the kids to see this kind of support on a special day for them,” Smith said. “We just want to say thank you to all of these men who took a little bit of their time to come out and celebrate with our kids at Maupin Elementary School.”
The next Flash Dads event will take place in October.
