Stonestreet Elementary School is demonstrating its commitment to helping its community as the holiday season approaches.
Earlier this month, the school decided to start a food drive, which would be a friendly competition among classrooms.
"We decided just to help our community," Stonestreet principal Katie Williams said. "While every classroom bringing in food drive items, my [Family Resource Officer] Amy Medley asked families who needed assistance, and so we were able to collect about 2,000 items, and we had 64 families reach out for food baskets, and we were able to supply them ourselves."
Of the 2,000 items, Williams says there are many Thanksgiving items, as well as other non-perishable foods that families may need.
Because the school was able to get so much food donated, it was able to help the 64 Stonestreet families without needing additional support from an outside food bank.
"It just shows that people want to give, especially this time of the year, and this is the perfect time of the year to remember to give," Williams said. "What's beautiful is that we are taking care of our own. So, people who have extra, donated to fill in the gaps for people who don't."
In preparation for Thanksgiving, Shirley's Way also donated 62 turkeys, which are currently being housed in the school's freezer.
With the overwhelming amount of donations, Williams says it just proves what the Stonestreet Elementary community is all about.
"We're a family," Williams said.
