Elementary School Choices

Welcome to JCPS!

We have fantastic elementary schools in Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS). Each of our 89 elementary schools offers engaging, effective teaching in a caring, supportive environment. We offer a variety of learning opportunities through unique schools, programs, and activities that will inspire your student to reach their fullest potential.

This booklet will help you learn about the special offerings that each individual school can provide your student and family. Every JCPS school has dedicated and experienced teachers, technology for every student, family support services, and engaging after-school programming. They all contribute to our students’ sense of belonging as we teach them core skills like reading and math. But students are also introduced to art, music, other languages, and social skills as they learn to communicate and flourish in a constantly changing world.

Please take the time to review the multitude of offerings we have available, and determine how they align with the learning style and interests of your student.

At JCPS, our mission is to always do what’s best for our students. We hope this booklet will help you determine what’s best for your student.

Let’s Get Started

The Jefferson County Public School (JCPS) District has 89 elementary schools, all of which focus on core subjects like reading, writing, math, science, and social studies while also introducing students to a variety of other subjects, such as the arts, technology, and world languages.

To better predict your student’s educational path, JCPS is moving away from “clusters” and now designates elementary school zones by high school networks. Each elementary school is grouped into 1 of 15 feeder patterns—groups of 3 to 8 JCPS elementary schools located within a geographic area connected to a specific JCPS high school. JCPS guarantees your student a seat at one of the schools in their designated zone, determined by your student’s home address.JCPS also offers students living in the Choice Zone an option to attend school close to home or farther away.

While most elementary school students choose to attend one of the schools in their zone, JCPS has other programs to best match your student’s learning style or interests. We offer a variety of elementary magnet schools and magnet programs—many of which are nationally recognized or focus on a specialized area.

Register & Apply

Review Options and Select Preference

Decide what type of learning environment works best for your student, and explore school options, programs, and/or offerings at each school.

During the application process, you will be asked to rank schools in your designated zone by order of preference. You can also apply for up to two other options, such as a magnet school or a school-based magnet program.

Enrolling in school is a two-step process.

1.Register for JCPS if you are a new student.

2.Complete the Elementary Application.

Elementary School Options

Zone Schools (page 8)

  • Current JCPS students will be automatically enrolled in their resides school. New JCPS students who have already registered with the district and would like to attend their resides school should contact the school (not the Office of School Choice) to enroll.

Magnet Schools (page 68)

  • You can attend either your close-to-home option or the school designated for your address that is far away. This is only for incoming sixth graders, middle school students new to the district, or middle school students with a new address in the Choice Zone. An application is required to make your selection.

Magnet Programs (page 76)

  • If your preference is outside of your resides school boundary, you can select and apply for up to two magnet schools or programs.

Traditional Magnet Schools* (page 41)

  • If you are currently enrolled in a JCPS Traditional Magnet elementary school, no application is necessary. You will be automatically enrolled in the Traditional Magnet middle school that serves your home address.

*You must apply to a Traditional Magnet middle school if you are not currently enrolled in a Traditional Magnet elementary school.

Have You Registered?

You need to register if:

  • Your student has never attended a JCPS school.

How to Register

  • Online

  • At any JCPS middle school

  • At the Office of School Choice

Registration Process

  • All students new to JCPS must register with the district before applying for school. You can register at any time. Students who are currently enrolled in JCPS Early Childhood do not need to register again.

  • Students must be a resident of Jefferson County to register. If families are relocating, contact the Office of School Choice at (502) 485-6250.

  • You may register your student for school regardless of immigration status and/or a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. For more information, contact the Office of Access and Opportunity at (502) 485-3650.

After You Register

After you register, JCPS will verify your information and send you an email to complete your application, which can take up to two business days. Incoming kindergartners and/or new students to JCPS may then apply to schools within their zone. To find out which zone you’re located in, call the JCPS Demographics Office at (502) 485-3050 or use the online JCPS SchoolFinder search tool. (See page 4 to scan QR code.)

Apply

Dates to Remember

  • Applications open: November 3, 2025

  • Application deadline: December 19, 2025

  • Acceptance notification: April 2026

You need to apply if:

  • Your student has never attended a JCPS school.

  • Your student is entering kindergarten.

  • Your student has had a change of address.

  • Your student is applying for a magnet school or magnet program.

Application Process

Important to note: It’s important to reference the on-time application window. We accept late applications; however, space at your preferred school(s) may be limited based on school capacity.

All elementary students completing an application must rank the schools within their zone in order of preference. If you live in the Choice Zone, you must select between your close-to-home or far-away options before you begin ranking. JCPS keeps siblings together in elementary school zones. The district also considers parental choice, space, a student’s home address, and the diversity of the student body when placing students at schools. Due to capacity constraints, not all families can or will receive their first school choice.

Magnet Application Information

  • Students may submit one magnet application per year.

  • Submitting a magnet application doesn’t guarantee admission, and submitting false information will void an application.

  • Waiting lists are not kept from year to year.

  • Magnet applications can only be edited during the on-time application period.

  • Siblings of current or former magnet school students do not receive preference in the application process, but those who share the same date of birth (twins, triplets, etc.) are treated as one application. However, parents must submit a separate application for each student.

How to Apply

Families are encouraged to apply online (scan QR code), but in-person application options are available.

You can apply in person at the following locations:

  • JCPS Office of School Choice: 4309 Bishop Lane

  • Any school location

Elementary School Zones

Fast Facts
Application required

What is a zone?
A zone is a group of three to eight JCPS elementary schools located within a specific geographic area connected to a specific JCPS high school. This will better predict your student’s educational path. JCPS guarantees every student a seat at a school in their zone, which is determined by their home address.

Incoming kindergarten students, students new to JCPS, or students with an address change must complete an application.

All students may also apply for magnets, magnet programs, and school transfers.

Choice Zone

Students living within the Choice Zone (black outline) have the choice to attend the assigned elementary school that is close to home or a school that is farther away.

Incoming kindergarten students, students new to JCPS, or students with an address change in the Choice Zone must complete an application to rank their close-to-home or far-away school selections. All students may also apply for magnets and transfers.

Feeder Patterns

JCPS has developed 15 feeder patterns that allow parents to see the elementary, middle, and high school their student will attend based on their home address.

Percentages represent the portion of the student body to attend the indicated high school.

Important to note: Elementary Satellite Options

To address over-enrollment across elementary schools, the Jefferson County Board of Education (JCBE) introduced satellite schools for the 2025-26 school year.Price Elementary was added as a satellite option for the Moore Elementary Zone, and Watterson Elementary was added to the Fern Creek Elementary Zone.In the Southern Elementary Zone, Minors Lane Elementary was introduced as a satellite school.Dunn Elementary is a satellite option for the Waggener Elementary Zone. These schools will remain in their current zone, while also being an option for the newly established satellite area. This does not impact any current students. It only impacts kindergartners and those who are new to the zone.

Note: Please see page 16 for an explanation of Elementary Satellite Options.
