The Youth Performing Arts School (YPAS) at duPont Manual High School is striking a high note this year. Three of its ensembles—the Jazz Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Percussion Ensemble—have been selected to perform at nationally recognized music conferences, earning students the opportunity to showcase their talents on some of the most prestigious stages in the country.

“One of our primary goals in the YPAS Band program is to provide a well-rounded, comprehensive music experience for our students,” said Dr. Kevin Callihan, YPAS director of bands. “To have the opportunity to perform at these three prestigious events is life-changing for our students, staff, and program.”

Jazz Ensemble to Hit the Stage in New Orleans

The YPAS Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dr. Kevin Callihan and Conner Kinmon, has been invited to perform at the 17th annual Jazz Education Network Conference on Jan. 10 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Only three high school ensembles nationwide received this honor. The JEN Conference, often described as a blend of music festival, networking hub, and educational summit, brings together jazz icons, educators, and students from across the globe.

“Having the opportunity to travel to New Orleans to share the stage with some of the greatest jazz musicians, ensembles, and educators in the world is a huge honor for this program,” Callihan said.

YPAS junior and saxophonist Noah Sparks echoed that excitement.

“The YPAS Jazz ensemble has been working very hard, and we are extremely excited to show off what we’ve been preparing and to hear everyone else,” Sparks said.

Symphonic Band to Perform in Florida

The YPAS Symphonic Band will travel to Tampa, Florida, to perform at the National Band Association/College Band Directors National Association Southern Division Conference on Feb. 20 at the University of South Florida.

The Symphonic Band, led by Callihan, Kinmon, and Sam Riddick, was one of just two ensembles chosen from the Southern Division, which spans 11 states.

“We’re incredibly proud to showcase our entire program—from freshman to seniors—on a national stage,” Kinmon said. “It’s an honor to represent both the Commonwealth and JCPS with pride and purpose.”

Trumpet player Drew Moutachouik, a YPAS junior and section leader, said this performance is a big one.

“Every performance is a unique opportunity, and this one goes over the moon in opportunities for young performers,” Moutachouik said.

Percussion Ensemble to Perform at Midwest Clinic

The YPAS Percussion Ensemble will travel to Chicago, Illinois, to perform at the 79th annual Midwest Clinic International Band and Orchestra Conference on Dec. 17.

The ensemble, directed by Callihan, Riddick, and Kinmon, is one of only five groups nationwide to receive this invitation. The Midwest Clinic is the world’s largest instrumental music education conference, drawing around 17,000 attendees from across all 50 states and more than 40 countries.

“The opportunity to perform at The Midwest Clinic is a tremendous honor,” Riddick said. “It allows us to represent our school, our city, and JCPS on an international stage, showcasing the dedication and talent of our students.”

To prepare, the ensemble will host a send-off concert with the Louisville Winds, conducted by Nan Moore, on Sunday, Dec. 14, at 3 p.m. at YPAS.

Senior percussionist Quinton Schwaniger said the experience reflects years of practice.

“The hard work, dedication, and continuous drive of the ensemble have truly paid off,” Schwaniger said. “I'm honored to be a member of this group and hope that our accomplishment can carry on the legacy of YPAS as a prestigious school for years to come.”
