Several Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) are among the best in Kentucky, according to the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings of elementary and middle schools. The 2025 report analyzed more than 103,000 schools nationwide, evaluating student performance in mathematics and reading/language arts, along with how schools serve students across socioeconomic backgrounds.
Greathouse/Shryock Traditional Elementary named #1 in Kentucky
Greathouse/Shryock Traditional topped the list of elementary schools in Kentucky, earning the #1 ranking for its exceptional academic performance and commitment to student success.
Norton Elementary ranks in state’s top 10
Also recognized among the state’s best, Norton Elementary School placed #8 in Kentucky, reflecting the strong teaching and learning happening throughout JCPS elementary classrooms.
Brown, Meyzeek, Barret, and Noe among top 25 middle schools
JCPS middle schools also made a strong showing in the rankings.
James Graham Brown School earned the #2 spot among Kentucky middle schools, continuing its reputation for academic excellence.
Meyzeek Middle School ranked #20.
Barret Traditional Middle School came in at #23.
Noe Middle School rounded out the list at #25.
A Reflection of Districtwide Commitment
According to U.S. News & World Report, half of each school’s score was based on student proficiency in state assessments, while the other half took into account those results within the context of each school’s socioeconomic demographics. Schools recognized in the rankings not only achieved high test scores but also demonstrated success in educating all students effectively.
“These rankings highlight what we already know,” said Superintendent Dr. Brian Yearwood. “Our schools are doing incredible work to ensure every student has the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed.”
