Magnet Schools of America National Award of Merit Distinction

J. Graham Brown School earned the prestigious 2026 Magnet School of Distinction designation from Magnet Schools of America (MSA).

This national recognition highlights the school’s success in driving high academic standards, fostering diversity and delivering specialized, integrated instruction.

Excellence in Self-Directed Learning

J. Graham Brown is renowned for its unique K-12 academic environment, which emphasizes self-directed learning. By fostering a culture where students take ownership of their education, the school creates a pathway for lifelong success.

Principal Dr. Angela Parsons celebrated the announcement, noting the award validates the hard work of the entire school community.

"Being named a School of Distinction by Magnet Schools of America affirms our commitment to teaching and learning grounded in our Self-Directed Learning magnet theme, driven by our dispositions of independence, empathy, innovation, and advocacy," Parsons said. “This recognition reflects a school community where rigorous, theme-based instruction, student voice and agency, and inclusive, equitable practices come together to challenge students academically while shaping who they are as people.”

Magnet Schools of America will honor Brown for this distinction at the MSA National Conference in April in San Diego.

About the Award

To receive a National Merit Award, Magnet Schools of America members must submit a detailed application, which is scored by a panel of educators. Schools are judged and scored on their demonstrated ability to:

  • Raise student academic achievement.

  • Promote racial and socioeconomic diversity.

  • Provide integrated curricula and instruction.

  • Create strong family and community partnerships that enhance the school’s magnet theme.

“This award honors the collective work of educators, students, and families who believe excellence is measured not only by what students know, but by how they think, lead, and care for others,” Parsons said. “We are forging reasoned minds and educated hearts of self-directed lifelong learners!”
